Greater Louisville Chapter #2021

The Greater Louisville Chapter was formed in 1993 in order to promote and support ballroom dancing in the greater Louisville area. Since then, we have steadily grown. We publish a monthly newsletter which includes member news, dance related articles, as well as other interesting topics. Also included is a directory of social dancing in the area and information on special dancing events.

We hold two social dances every month in the Grand Ballroom of The Sternwheeler located at 201 East Elm Street, New Albany, IN 47150. One regular dance and another titled "Ballroom Unleashed" which plays a lot of todays popular music. Light refreshments are served in a non-smoking, non-alcoholic athmosphere. There is a thirty minute beginner/intermediate lesson at the beginning of the regular monthly dance and we encourage local dance instructors and studio owners to attend by giving them free admission. We have excellent music provided by our own DJs. In addition, we hire well-known DJ, Jack Meinking at least twice a year.

Charles Hardin
President
charleshardin@lousabda.org

Charles remembers being “scared to death of a dance floor” when he was a teenager. He never attended any place where he would be confronted with the possibility of “having to dance”. According to Charles, he “focused mainly on my business” and other areas of interest and at the ripe old age of 16, the slim young builder began his building business, constructing homes in the Louisville area and in his spare time, pursuing a private pilot license. After his first eleven months in the building business he was featured in an article honoring Louisville’s youngest builder, ‘Young Builders First’, in a local area newspaper; he decided to legitimize his business by fulfilling a dream and form his first corporation, Quartland Homes Inc. He continued building and developing real estate, routinely “working 80 to 90 hours a week” , in Louisville and surrounding counties throughout the next several decades, working as a draftsman, a building component manufacturer and returning to college. After his decision in 1994 to “not sale any more of my buildings”, he entered industrial, commercial and multi-family production and has been actively developing, operating and managing, his area real estate holdings and related businesses, SCH Development Inc., SCH/Austin Woods, LLC, SCH/Austin Park, LLC, SCH/Austin Station, LLC, SCH/Realty, LLC, SCH/Walnut Grove, LLC, SCH/Hunters Run, LLP, South Jefferson Industrial Park, LLC, Truss Panel, LLC and Charles A. Hardin Construction Inc. After 36 years in business, “tenacity” he says, “is probably my best attribute” and, as a result, according to a sanctioned Louisville Apartment Association survey in 2007/2008, his companies were among Louisville’s top eight producers in apartment/condominium development, with unit production every 87.6 hours and assets in excess of $50M. When asked what he does for a living, Charles is unpretentious, his reply is simply, “as little as possible”.

Charles started playing with the idea of ballroom dancing in 2001 after much involvement with his two daughters, who were dancing tap, jazz, and ballet with the nationally recognized ‘360 Dance’ team. “I remember watching both of them as they placed 2nd and 11th in the National Competition they attended in Orlando, Florida”, he said, adding “how graceful and artful they seemed on stage”. “I knew it was a lot of work, time consuming and very expensive to support them in their dancing or rather their study in human movement, and that it would be extremely challenging for me”, he said. Inspired by his daughters, Charles enrolled in dance lessons and after several months he decided to enter his first competition; the 2002 Southeastern Regional Amateur Dancesport Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. There he took 1st place in Newcomer Rumba/Swing and 1st place in Newcomer Waltz/Tango/Foxtrot. It wouldn’t be until April, 2008; however, that Charles would be able to compete again. Suddenly, “I found myself as a full- time single parent of two teenage daughters, without a dance partner and I wanted to contribute to the dance community any way I could”, he said. In his spare time Charles began visiting various USA Dance competitions throughout the country and decided to run for President of the Louisville chapter of USA Dance. “I thought I had some good ideas and I felt my business acumen could be helpful”, he said, and “I also really enjoy the chance to make a positive impact on the local male perspective concerning something as dramatic and artistic as dance”. Charles was elected incoming President of the Greater Louisville Chapter of USA Dance in December 2003, adding, “I remember my first move to round table just about everything in order to decentralize control” and “to seek a motion to give money away in support of other chapters was very different for our board”. He remembers, “In hindsight, the only other time I feel they thought I was crazy was when I wanted to acquire hosting rights for USA Dance Nationals in 2007”. Charles stated, “We have been blessed to be able to more than triple the net assets of our chapter while donating over $2700 to area charities through our first and second ‘Annual Charity Ball’, and institute first time honors through the ‘Chapter Volunteer of the Year Award’ and ‘Chapter Lifetime Achievement Award’ for our volunteers who have worked so many years, tirelessly”. During his tenure, Charles has worked at all the Louisville competitions held in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009 in addition to serving as Chair of the 2009 Derby City Dancesport Championships. In 2008 Charles accepted the appointment of USA Dance Area Coordinator for the State of Kentucky and USA Dance Region II Assistant Vice President and through this appointment has helped to develop useful tools such as surveys for statistical data collection, among other things. He states “I think it is very important to remain focused on the fact that we are an integral part of a large national organization and that whatever each chapter does should be done with that in mind”. “Integrity” he says, “is a very important ingredient”.

Since his first competition ,the 2002 Southeastern Regional Amateur Dancesport Championships in Atlanta, Georgia where he placed 1st in Newcomer Rumba/Swing/Waltz/Tango and Foxtrot, Charles has returned to competitive dancing and along with his partner, Rae Schooley, has taken 1st place Senior I Bronze Smooth at the 2008 USA Dance Pittsburgh Dancesport Championships, 3rd place Senior I Bronze Smooth at the 2009 USA Dance Smoky Mountain Dancesport Championships, 1st place Senior I Smooth at the 2009 USA Dance Chicago Dancesport Challenge, 1st place Senior I Bronze Smooth at the 2009 Derby City Dancesport Championships, 1st Place Adult Bronze Smooth at the 2009 Heartland Classic USA Dancesport Championships, 1st Place Senior I Bronze Smooth at the 2009 Heartland Classic USA Dancesport Championships and 1st Place Adult Syllabus American Multi-Dance Team Match at the 2009 Heartland Classic USA Dancesport Championships. Of his success in competition, Charles states,” you really are only competing against yourself, your ability to remember and perform to the best you can on that day”, adding “I am very blessed to be with Rae, in a partnership, that is committed to excellence and hard work as a team pulling together”.

Charles travels often, internationally, with his daughters and in addition has a variety of hobbies: When he is not dancing or watching his daughters (who have just begun ballroom dancing), he can be found gardening, winemaking, beekeeping, candle making, weaving, scuba diving, or at his Lake Cumberland cabin, “These days’ r hours”, on his boat or airplane. Charles likes to sum up his USA Dance participation, whether it is working on competitive dancing or a task at hand, in a rather unique way, “I am thankful to be a part” and “I am thankful each time I walk out on a dance floor; glad to just be there; I always have my mother on my mind”. “She never did bother to say goodbye to me”, only to “HAVE FUN”.

Peggy Finn
Treasurer
peggyfinn@lousabda.org

Peggy is in her fourth year on the Board and third year as Treasurer. Peggy is a native of New Albany, Indiana. She graduated from New Albany High School and then began studies at Indiana University Southeast. After attending IUS for 2 years, she took a leave from her studies and went to work for Kentucky Trust Company where she worked until the birth of her second child, Angie. When Angie was 2 years old, Peggy packed up the kids, took them to the day care on campus, and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Her son, Jeremy followed in her footsteps, and in 1998, he also graduated from Indiana University Southeast with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Peggy had set a long-term goal to sit for the CPA Exam. So in 1998, she began to study for the exam and went on to pass the exam with her son, Jeremy. Peggy passed the exam, and Jeremy made the highest score in the state of Kentucky. Jeremy is now a partner at Monroe Shine & Company, a local accounting firm. Angie went on to graduate from IUS also with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Peggy then spent many years in corporate accounting at Clark County Health Department and American Commercial Barge Line in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Peggy began dancing about 6 years ago. She took lessons at Metro Ballroom and then Bravo Dance Studio. Soon she met Kim Holley, the instructor at Kim’s Dance Studio. Peggy began lessons with Kim and one day the two of them decided to open a dance shoe store. They wanted to open a store that would be more economical for the dance community. The store, Ballroom & Boogie Shoes is a great success. While it began with just a few shoes, the inventory now includes 700 pairs of dance shoes, dance apparel, jewelry, and competition wear, for both ladies and gentlemen. They also have a section for tap, jazz and ballet, selling both shoes and apparel. Ballroom & Boogie Shoes is a wonderful way for Peggy to make a career out of her hobby.

Peggy is a member of Silver Street United Methodist Church where she serves on the Finance Committee and is the Auditor for the annual financial report. She has also been involved with the American Cancer Society Relay For Life for nearly 15 years. She has served on the planning committee in many different capacities. Recently she held a dance with the proceeds totally donated to the Relay For Life. She hosted 75 of her fellow dancers and raised over $1000. Peggy is also a member of the Derby City BOP Club, another dance organization in town.

Peggy feels very fortunate to be able to work with the dance community on a daily basis. With Ballroom & Boogie Shoes she is able to meet both new dancers and dancers who have a lot of experience and some in between. In her capacity as Treasurer of USA Dance she gets to greet those same people each month at the dances. Peggy believes that dancers are some of the best people a person could ever meet.

Nancy Davis
Board Member
nancydavis@lousabda.org

Nancy Davis is a native of North Carolina and grew up in the Research Triangle area. She graduated from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Sciences in Accounting and moved to Kentucky in the late 1970’s where she joined the international accounting firm now named KPMG.

In her thirteen years with the firm, Nancy worked with a variety of clients including manufacturing companies, a dairy cooperative, not-for-profits, and many banks. In 1991, she was fortunate to join Stock Yards Bank & Trust Company, a Louisville bank with a century-long reputation of integrity and financial success and strength. The Bank’s parent company, S.Y. Bancorp, Inc. is publicly traded on NASDAQ Global Select Market. There, Nancy is a CPA and holds the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at the Bank and Bancorp.

When Nancy began taking ballroom dance lessons in the early 90's at Dance With Grace to become a better social dancer, she had no idea that competitive dancing existed. Having first tried pro/am competitions, she met and began working with an amateur partner, Mike Cobb in 2002 at Ballroom East. She continues to pursue an illusive goal of finding some glimmer of artistry in herself. While she is clearly a left-brained, analytical Spock-like individual and acknowledges that dancing is a stretch because it is so different from what she does naturally, she is determined to find success in her pursuit. She is indebted to her teachers, Charles Jones and Linda Jackson, and partner, Mike, for their patience and endless insights and encouragement.

Nancy also enjoys being in the kitchen, dinner with friends, and spending time with her dogs in addition to ballroom dance. Before competitive dancing, she was winning blue ribbons in obedience trials and shows with her shelties. If there were more hours in her day, she would resume English smocking, sewing and tailoring, home improvement projects and gardening.

Nancy is also active in the community both with professional and charitable organizations. In some combination, she is/has been a volunteer, committee member, board member or board chair for Junior Achievement, the Wayne Oates Institute, Historic Homes Foundation, and the Kentucky Society of CPAs. She participated as a mentor in Jefferson Community College’s mentor program and served as a tutor in Jefferson County’s Adult Education Program helping adults to learn English as a second language. Nancy has been on the speakers’ bureau for several educational organizations, is a Leadership Louisville alum and a Tower and Bell Award recipient.

As a board member for our USA Dance Chapter, Nancy brings extensive professional experience, organizational skills, analytical abilities and business insights. Couple that with her appreciation of dance as a pursuit and sport, and VOILA!

Rae Schooley
Board Member
raeschooley@lousabda.org

Rae was born in Louisville, Kentucky and had no idea she would ever move. But, after the blizzard of 78’ her family decided they had had enough of the inclement weather and moved to Florida. She was 13 and so excited! Rae's family had spent Christmas at Fort Myers Beach for 5 years previously and loved it! They lived in the sunshine state for 10 years.

She received her Associates degree from Edison Community college and then her BFA from Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota. With a graphic design degree in hand, she moved back to Kentucky and worked for various ad agencies and newspapers in Kentucky and later in Tennessee.

She decided in 98’ to go back to school to attain her teaching certificate while working and substitute teaching. She received her first teaching position in Illinois, a week after she completed her teaching certification in 2000. Rae went on to teach in Marshall County, Kentucky and obtained her master’s degree at that time. She moved back to Louisville with an elementary art teaching position in Oldham County. Art has always been her passion. She remembers when her first grade teacher, Mrs. Stuebling, from Rutherford Elementary displayed her art in the hall. She enjoys teaching art to young children. She also enjoy the summers off!

Dancing is another story! Rae remembers one or two dance lessons when she was a little girl, along with some baton lessons and one year of cheerleading. That was the most for dance lessons! She thinks her mother figured out she needed to stick with art lessons.

When Charles Hardin and Rae met, she knew immediately of his love for dancing, and believed he did of her dancing also. Rae had been taking belly dancing lessons for a year, but the idea of ballroom dancing intrigued her. After Charles took her to their first dance, she was hooked on ballroom dancing! She couldn’t wait to begin lessons! She knew she had a lot of work to do to “catch up” with Charles since he was already a competitive dancer and had years of experience. Rae has been taking lessons at Bravo Dance Studio in Louisville since October 2007 and am still and will continue to be “catching up.”

After 19 lessons Charles and Rae competed in Pittsburgh and took 1st place in Senior 1 Bronze Smooth at the 2008 USA Dance Pittsburgh Dancesport Championships. Later on, they took 3rd place in Senior I Bronze Smooth at the 2009 USA Dance Smoky Mountain Dancesport Championships, 1st place Senior I Smooth at the 2009 USA Dance Chicago Dancesport Challenge, 1st place Senior I Bronze Smooth at the 2009 Derby City Dancesport Championships, 1st Place Adult Bronze Smooth at the 2009 Heartland Classic USA Dancesport Championships, 1st Place Senior I Bronze Smooth at the 2009 Heartland Classic USA Dancesport Championships and 1st Place Adult Syllabus American Multi-Dance Team Match at the 2009 Heartland Classic USA Dancesport Championships.

Rae is so excited to be dancing and a part of USA Dance. As a board member, she hopes to inspire others to dance and also keep dance alive in other areas of the community and beyond. As Rae continues with her study of dance, the movement of her body and keeping the connection, the movement becomes a feeling of one visually sharing with others through dance.
